TREK-Together Reaching Every Kid!
Exciting News for the TREK program! In partnership with the Joplin Schools Bright Futures Initiative, the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce is expanding and evolving Teaching Reading to Every Kid to TREK - Together Reaching Every Kid! There will be increased mentoring, tutoring and volunteering opportunities offered for all Joplin Schools.
Because of the commitment of community volunteers, the lives of over 1,000 students have been positively affected since the inception of TREK in 2000. TREK has increased student achievement and has been a factor in the success of the Joplin Schools.
How does TREK Tutors work?
TREK Tutors is an after school tutoring program designed to help improve student achievement. For one hour a week, a TREK tutor works with a student in one of Joplin's 13 elementary schools.
The 2010-2011 program begins Monday, September 20th and runs through the end of April 2011. Tutoring occurs from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the elementary schools on the days indicated:
Cecil Floyd: Tuesday & Thursday
Columbia: Tuesday & Thursday
Duenweg: Monday & Thursday
Duquesne: Monday & Tuesday
Eastmorland: Monday & Tuesday
Emerson: Monday & Tuesday
Irving: Monday & Thursday
Jefferson: Tuesday & Thursday
Kelsey Norman: Tuesday & Thursday
McKinley: Tuesday & Thursday
Royal Heights: Monday & Thursday
Stapleton: Monday & Tuesday
West Central: Monday & Tuesday
TREK helps the entire Joplin community by taking a proactive approach to helping students who are not performing at grade level. It also helps the community by strengthening the educational foundation at an early age. This, in turn, supplies our businesses with a qualified workforce and more productive citizens. The TREK program makes it possible for students who need extra reading and math skills to catch up with their classmates. TREK brings another adult into a child's life that cares about them and shows it by devoting their time as a one-on-one tutor. TREK has been very successful in helping students have bright futures!
